A Dutch startup backed by investors such as Pale Blue Dot, First Momentum and Katapult has opened its first direct air capture (DAC) plant.

The company looks to scale a cheaper method of scrubbing carbon from the atmosphere.

"It's the first device in the world of this kind," Brineworks CEO Gudfinnur Sveinsson tells Impact Loop.

Netherlands-based Brineworks has opened a direct air capture (DAC) demonstration plant at Amsterdam Science Park.

The plant is non-commercial. Brineworks will give its captured CO2 to partner companies for now, with sales coming at the next stage. It is capable of pulling up to a modest 100 tonnes of CO2 from the air each year.
