After vegan burger ban: 'Do we have to stop saying beefsteak tomatoes and coconut milk now?'

The EU’s decision to ban words like sausage and burger for plant-based products has sparked more than just anger among foodtech founders in the alt-protein scene – it’s also raised a lot of questions.

"Can we still say beefsteak tomato?" asks vegan cheese firm Stockeld Dreamery's founder Sorosh Tavakoli.

Reactions from foodtech entrepreneurs came quickly after Wednesday’s vote in the European Parliament.

"Crazy," "stupid" and "worrying" were some of the words used by Peter Bolinder, CEO of Swedish foodtech firm Proteinish, Lisa Laurell of mung bean foodtech startup Oh Mungood, and Ramkumar Nair, founder of hybrid meat company Smaqo.
