Emerald Technology Ventures has added Mitsui Kinzoku as a limited partner in its industrial innovation fund.
The fund is an evergreen vehicle backing startups across carbon neutrality, robotics, batteries, next-generation energy, and advanced computing.
The Industrial Innovation Fund operates on a flex-term structure, allowing LPs to enter and exit on their own timeline with a minimum holding period of five years, a spokesperson for Emerald tells Impact Loop.
The fund currently manages €290m across more than 40 LPs and 30 active portfolio companies, the person said.
It targets strategic investors seeking exposure to industrial technology across eight themes, the spokesperson adds.
These are: AI build-out, energy transition and decarbonisation, feedstock and raw material transformation, climate adaptation, supply chain reconfiguration, workforce and skills transformation, business model shift – including servitisation – and industrial resilience tied to the new defence cycle.
Japanese backers
Mitsui Kinzoku is a Japan-based manufacturer of non-ferrous metals and advanced materials, supplying the automotive and electronics sectors with battery materials, semiconductor materials, and automotive components.
The company becomes Emerald's 13th Japanese LP, joining the likes of DIC, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Nabtesco.
As an LP, Mitsui Kinzoku gains structured access to Emerald's startup pipeline, with pathways to joint development agreements, pilot projects, and manufacturing partnerships, the firm said in a statement.
The growing Japanese LP presence reflects a wider pattern in European VC. For instance, Helsinki-based NordicNinja has built its LP base around Japanese corporates seeking exposure to Nordic and Baltic deep tech, with backers including Honda, Itochu, and NTT.
Emerald was founded in 2000 and manages more than €1.3bn in assets under management and advisory across four funds, including its Global Water Fund II, which Impact Loop covered at its €60m first close in October 2025.
