A report by charity Foodrise has unveiled a significant imbalance in EU agricultural subsidies, heavily skewed towards meat production over plant-based alternatives. The analysis reveals that beef and lamb receive 580 times more financial support than legumes, despite calls from scientists to shift dietary habits towards more sustainable and health-conscious plant proteins.

Martin Bowman of Foodrise, the report's author, emphasized the environmental and health implications of this disparity. "It’s scandalous that billions of euros of EU taxpayer money is being used to prop up such a high-emissions industry," he said.
