The Swedish auction firm PS Auction has been tasked with liquidating the assets of Northvolt Ett Expansion AB, a process the company claims will be among Europe’s largest bankruptcy auctions.

Northvolt Ett Expansion was responsible for managing an expansion project at Northvolt’s Skellefteå battery plant, known as Northvolt Ett. The project aimed to boost production capacity for lithium-ion batteries.

However, in September 2024, Northvolt decided to terminate the expansion project, and the subsidiary was declared bankrupt in October the same year.

Equipment valued at €270m

The assets primarily consist of advanced components for battery manufacturing, with an estimated purchase value of around €270m (SEK 3 billion).

"As bankruptcy administrators, our primary interest is to carry out the liquidation process as favourably as possible for the creditors. By collaborating with PS Auction, we are ensuring a structured and efficient process to maximise the outcome for the bankruptcy estate," said Jonas Premfors, bankruptcy administrator at DLA Piper, in a press statement.

Mostly unused equipment

According to PS Auction, most of the equipment being sold is unused, with some items still unpacked. The catalogue includes everything from pumps and piping systems to electrical cabinets and transformers—components that could be valuable to other companies in battery manufacturing or related industries.

"The auction offers a unique behind-the-scenes insight into Sweden’s most talked-about industrial project, and a rare opportunity for large-scale reuse. It represents substantial value for players seriously investing in vehicle electrification," said Henriksson.

Digital tours

To enhance accessibility, PS Auction has developed 3D materials for virtual tours, allowing potential buyers to inspect the equipment in detail. Sales will occur through both open online auctions and tender processes for more complex production lines.

The auctions commence today and will continue over the coming months due to the sheer volume of equipment to be sold. All items available for purchase are listed on a dedicated website.
